Splinter Cell: Blacklist - Review
Monday Aug 26, 2013
Monday Aug 26, 2013
Splinter Cell: Blacklist is most certainly the best entry in the stealth series since Chaos Theory way back in 2005. And to long term fans of Sam Fisher that will get them rather excited. Chaos Theory has always been considered the best game to grace the franchise to date as it was the last time gamers could be 100% sure they were getting a complete stealth based game. Conviction threw that out the window by presenting fully loaded action at a crazy pace.
Returning to Blacklist we see that the fantastic Michael Ironside who many consider the true heart and soul of Sam Fisher has been replaced for a younger model in Eric Johnson. Johnson does put in a good performance as Fisher, he has a clear understanding of Fisher’s character and this comes across, but at times some will still wish that the deep rumbling voice of Ironside was delivering the lines.
Nonetheless, Fisher is at the head of a team called Fourth Echelon who are going after a mysterious group called The Engineers. They are demanding that the USA immediately withdraws all their troops on foreign soil.
What happens if the United States does not comply I hear you ask? Well The Engineers will then conduct a series of terror attacks that will continue to worsen known as “The Blacklist.” It is up to Fourth Echelon and Sam to stop The Engineers and of course this means doing what we all love in a Splinter Cell game, sneaking around in dark places using many different types of lethal/non-lethal gadgetry.
However there are 3 different ways you can play the game: Ghost, Assault and Panther. Ghost as you might suspect is the old school approach that many love from the earlier games, staying out of view, sticking to shadows in order to get past enemies, leaving them to get on with their job as if you were never there.
Assault is also self-explanatory, stealth is forgotten and you go in guns blazing trying to take the enemy out in a good old gun battle. Panther is a mixture of the two, leaving it up to you to decide when to stay quiet or create some noise.
The single-player campaign itself does feel a bit short, but contains moments of utter brilliance such as when Fisher is at Guantanamo Bay…we shall leave you to enjoy that moment. Where Blacklist does excel though is in the multiplayer department. We get the return of Spies Vs Mercs where you can engage in two-on-two or four-on-four battles in the dark. Spies are quick on their feet and packed to the teeth with gadgets as well as having the much loved night vision, Mercs however are heavily armoured and are carrying some heavy-duty hardware. Games play out like a grown up but awesome version of hide and seek.
Verdict:
Splinter Cell: Blacklist feels
like it wanted to cover so many different types of game-play in order to keep the modern Call of Duty/Battlefield
gamer happy, as well as those old school fans who love their stealth. This leads
to a game that is walking on a tightrope, sometimes leading to it having a
scare or wobble. That aside the single-player campaign does give you enough enjoyment, but
the multiplayer is where you will feel the most rewarded…playing late into the
night making you believe you are as good as Sam Fisher.
Score: 8.5/10

*Author's Note: Splinter Cell: Blacklist is available for PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U. Our review was conducted with and Xbox 360 version of the game.*

EA SPORTS UFC REVEALS FIRST PRE-ALPHA GAMEPLAY
Tuesday Aug 20, 2013
Tuesday Aug 20, 2013
August 20, 2012 – Today at gamescom, the world’s
largest trade fair and event for interactive games and entertainment, EA
SPORTS™ unveiled the first ever pre-alpha gameplay footage for the
highly anticipated EA SPORTS UFC. Powered by EA SPORTS IGNITE, players will “Feel the Fight”
as the action, emotion, and intensity inside the Octagon™ are brought
to life in ways that were never before possible in a video game. The
next generation of fighting begins in the Spring of 2014 when EA SPORTS UFC is released for the Xbox One® and the PlayStation®4.
With many months left to go in development, players eager for a first look at the game can watch the EA SPORTS UFC Pre-Alpha Gameplay from the EA gamescom press conference now.
Powered by EA SPORTS IGNITE, players will “Feel the Fight” in EA SPORTS UFC with these groundbreaking gameplay features:
· MMAi –
A mixed martial artist’s mind is as important as his heart. Every
licensed fighter in the game will have changing goals and fight plans,
based on their real-life tendencies and each fight situation.
· Real-Time Exertion –
Real-Time Exertion brings each moment of action to life in your
gameplay experience. Through real-time vein popping, skin discoloration,
muscle flex, as well as signs of fatigue setting in through the course
of each round, players will witness the effort it takes to be one of the
best fighters in the world.
· Fighter Likeness and Facial Animations –
Fighters in the game have been created from high-resolution 3D head
scans to deliver revolutionary character likeness and authenticity.
Powered by EA SPORTS IGNITE, new facial animation technology delivers
more expression and emotion than ever before in gaming and will
communicate an unparalleled sense of awareness and intelligence in the
Octagon.
· Full Body Deformation – The team that revolutionized sports by bringing authentic physics to Fight Night
changes the game again with an all-new, full-body deformation system
that moves and displaces the fighter’s flesh in real time. For the first
time, the strength of every submission and power of every strike will
truly make an impression.
· Precision Movement –
The Precision Movement locomotion system grounds the fighters,
eliminating unrealistic slipping and sliding across the canvas. More
realistic physics-driven movement delivers more realistic action as the
overall transfer of energy from the ground up delivers more impactful
and believable strikes and takedowns.
· Dynamic Striking –
A dynamic environment allows players to pull off jaw-dropping moves
using the Octagon, including roundhouse kicks, superman punches and much
more. Combine those abilities with the best striking technology in the
industry and that one perfect strike could change the fight.
· Strategic Submission Battles – EA SPORTS UFC
reinvents the ground game to create a battle for position and control
that captures the strategy of a submission battle. Like the real sport, in EA SPORTS UFC fighters will work through multiple stages as they work to advance or escape from a fight-ending submission.
· Real Damage – EA SPORTS UFC
introduces a non-linear damage system which can result in big damage
coming from a single strike. The system produces a greater variety of
cuts and contusions that is true-to-life and has never been possible in a
simulation fighting game.

GOODISON GETS IN THE GAME
Friday Aug 16, 2013
Friday Aug 16, 2013
Goodison Park will make its gaming debut in FIFA 14, after Everton
penned a new two-year deal to secure EA SPORTS™ as the Club’s official
gaming partner until the end of the 2014/15 season.
The
announcement follows on from a successful partnership with the sports
entertainment brand over the past two years, and the inclusion of
Everton’s iconic stadium in the latest version of FIFA 14 is a prominent
feature of the deal.
EA SPORTS committed to featuring Goodison
in its most lifelike format in the popular football video game and paid a
visit earlier this year to capture the all-important details of one of
the oldest football grounds in the world.
Dan Holman, Head of UK
Product Marketing, EA SPORTS said: “We’re delighted to extend our
partnership with Everton and especially to be adding Goodison Park to
the stadium roster in FIFA 14. This will ensure fans will get a
completely authentic experience. We look forward to working closely with
the club over the next two years.”
Everton’ s Commercial
Director Dave Biggar said: “We’re delighted that EA SPORTS are once
again joining our portfolio of official partners – and even more so that
Goodison will make its debut in FIFA 14. The game is hugely popular so
we have no doubt that Evertonians will be looking forward to playing
inside the stadium, even if it is in a virtual sense!”
Not only
will Evertonians be able to enjoy playing in the home of the Blues in
their virtual world, their favourite stars will be more realistic than
ever in the new game.
Everton’s first team line-up underwent a
360-degree 3D digital head scan at the Club’s training ground so that EA
SPORTS could make their virtual counterparts as lifelike as possible.
And
supporters will be able to try out the brand-new Everton features at
Goodison Park during the 2013/14 campaign when the popular EA SPORTS
Dugout makes a return.
The special unit, which features two large
dugout-style seats and contains Xbox 360 game consoles, and iPads,
proved popular with Evertonians last season and will be back at Goodison
Park for selected fixtures throughout the 2013/14 campaign – starting
with the home game against Newcastle United on Monday 30 September.
Members
of the first team will also be able to try out the game when the dugout
pays a visit to Finch Farm to host this season’s Pro-Player Tournament.
Last season Shane Duffy emerged as the FIFA 13 champion after a
hotly-contested tournament with Seamus Coleman, Darron Gibson and Victor
Anichebe.
As part of the partnership, a special Everton FIFA 14
cover will be available for supporters to download for free when the
game is launched on Friday 27 September. A very limited-edition game
with a wrapped Everton sleeve will be also be available to buy in store
at Everton One or Everton Two and online at evertondirect.com.

FIFA 14 Pure Shot & Real Ball Physics
Wednesday Aug 07, 2013
Wednesday Aug 07, 2013
Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s bicycle-kick against England, Lionel Messi’s first goal at Barça as a 17-year-old, Papiss Cisse’s volley against Chelsea; an amazing goal can set the world abuzz. The EA SPORTS FIFA development has taken that into consideration when building features for FIFA 14. Two new gameplay features will transform the way goals are scored and make every shot feel real and rewarding.
Pure Shot will let FIFA fans feel what it is like to connect with the perfect strike while a brand new ball physics system called Real Ball Physics will ensure the trajectory of the ball behaves as it would in real life. The combination of Pure Shot and Real Ball Physics will open the door for the most rewarding and varied shot selection in the FIFA franchise to date.
Pure Shot was developed to enable players to feel the same emotion of scoring great goals in FIFA 14 that your favorite striker does on Saturday mornings. The best goals are a combination of perfect timing, anticipation, and great positioning. Fans will be rewarded for all three in FIFA 14. Players now adjust their approach angle when the shot is started looking for a more suitable angle for hitting the ball. They also understand the phases of shooting and will adjust their stride and pace to hit the ball.
Players will try to set up for the best possible shot, but that will vary depending on where they are on the pitch and how the ball is delivered to their feet. Players will take what is available to them and that may mean taking an off-balanced shot or taking a rushed shot which can hinder the accuracy and strength of their attempt. New animations will support this and the foot sliding, skipping and scissor legs that can be seen in FIFA 13 will be eliminated.
Along with changes to the shooting system, the ball in FIFA 14 acts as it would in real world football, thanks to authentic ball physics based on new formulas which dictate the flight path and trajectory of a shot. Both were overhauled for FIFA 14 to match how the ball moves in space. This opens the door to more shot options. Players will now be able to strike the ball with force from distance, drill low rising shots with accuracy, and blast dipping, or swerving shots. There are also turbulence effects. None of this was ever possible in FIFA 13.
Pure Shot and Real Ball Physics are bound to make every shot attempt feel real and, when players connect with the perfect strike, exhilarating. Players will truly experience the emotion of scoring great goals.
